TAIPEI OPEN: PERMADI, STUER UNSEEDED

** This NEW SHUTTLENWS report is presented by YANG YANG Badminton Products and their Western USA agents BADMINTON ALLEY. **

January 19, 1999 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Fung Permadi's Korean Open men's singles success did not come soon enough for him to get a desirable seeded spot in his own adopted national association's Open badminton championships being held this week in Taipei. The four-star Chinese Taipei Open with a purse of 100,000 US dollars has attracted many top-rated entries and the newly crowned Korean Open champion did not make the seedings list.

Permadi, a former Indonesian national team player who has migrated to Taiwan, also has gotten a so-so draw. In the first round, he faces the upset-conscious Danish newcomer Kasper Fangel who last week dumped a heavily favored Rosobin Jeffer of Indonesia. If he gets past Fangel, he then faces either Korean Open semifinalist Johan Hadi Kusuma of Indonesia or the sixth-seeded Swedish giant Thomas Johansson.

Korean Open men's singles finalist Thomas Stuer of Denmark is also unseeded and has drawn as his first round opponent another upset-conscious newcomer, Rony Agustinus of Indonesia. Agustinus last week upended Malaysian ace Rashid Sidek.

World number one Peter Gade of Denmark is the top seed in the men's singles. However, he is still recovering from a severe case of the flu and he may not be able to compete. Some of the other seeded entries who had to pull out of the Korean Open last week are also doubtful.

Ardy Wiranata and two men's doubles pairs - Howard Bach and Mark Manha, Dean Schoppe and Matt Fogarty - are in the draw, representing the USA. There are no entries from Canada.
