December 14, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - The Korean pair of Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yung Sung today eliminated world men's doubles champion Chandra Wijaya and current partner Tony Gunawan of Indonesia in the second round of individual medal competition at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. Lee and Yoo combined their quickness and speed with superfast driving rallies to defeat the Indonesian pairing 15-11 and 15-13.

The Indonesians had a commanding 9-2 lead in the second but the Koreans then started to keep the rallies flat. They unloaded the lightning-quick driving attack that they had used to win the first set. This unsettled Wijaya and Gunawan and enabled the Koreans to catch up and then beat the Indon pair.

Lee and Yoo had previously beaten Wijaya and Gunawan in the finals of the All-England championships earlier this year 15-10 and 15-10 with similiar high-pressure fast-drive tactics.

Another Korean player, Ahn Jae Chang, upset 1997 East Asian Games men's singles champion Chen Feng (Fung Permadi) of Taiwan, 15-13, 6-15 and 15-9, while 1995 world men's singles finalist Park Sung Woo of Korea fell to Pullela Gopichand of India 15-17 and 2-15. Park had been drafted out of retirement to help with the Korean medal effort at the Asian Games.
