November 15, 1998 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - Choong Tan Fook, one of Malaysia's
premier badminton doubles players, was struck in the right eye by a shuttle
during a practice session this past Thursday and had to be rushed to a
hospital for treatment. Choong together with partner Cheah Soon Kit is a medal
hope in the men's doubles event at the upcoming Asian Games in early December.
Choong was doing some rapid-fire multiple shuttle drills with coach Chen
Changjie when one of the practice shuttles they were using broke apart after
being hit. One of the fragments struck Choong in the right eye, dizzying the
Malaysian player.
Choong was taken for first-aid treatment at a sports clinic, but was later
rushed to a hospital when bleeding was detected in the right eye, raising the
possibility of permanent eye damage.
The bleeding was treated at the hospital and the player is reportedly now
doing well. However, he has been confined to the hospital for several days. He
is expected to be released tomorrow (Monday).
Because of the injury, Cheah and Choong may not be able to participate in the
Hong Kong Open, scheduled for the last week of November. The tournament is the
last major event before the Asian Games and most of the medal hopes at the
Asian Games will be using the competition as a final tuneup.
