CALIFORNIA: HAN AND SHI TWIN TITLEISTS AT OCBC INTERNATIONAL

July 14, 1997 (NEW SHUTTLENWS) - American national badminton champions Kevin Han and Cindy Shi took home two titles each at the Orange County Badminton Club (OCBC) International badminton tournament that ended yesterday in Orange, California. Wu Chi Bing of New York City also captured two championships.

The OCBC International was held as part of the first anniversary celebrations of the club that is regarded by many as the finest badminton facility in the Western hemisphere. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Badminton Federation as a Class A championship and offered a purse of 10,000 US Dollars.

Kevin Han, playing out of the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, took the men's singles and men's doubles crowns. Han defeated Ignatius Rusli, the Indonesian-American who is based at the Orange County Badminton Club, in the finals 15-2 and 15-1.

In the men's doubles, Han teamed up with Wu Chi Bing. Han and Wu beat 1992 Olympian Benny Lee from San Jose (California) and his partner Ignatius Rusli in the championship match 17-14 and 15-7.

Cindy Shi's twin triumphs came in the women's singles and in the mixed doubles events. Shi, who is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, defeated England's Joanne Muggeridge in the women's singles final match 11-2, 5-11 and 11-4 for one of her titles.

Shi teamed up with Wu Chi Bing in the mixed doubles event, where the duo was victorious in the championship match, beating former Malaysian national team member Andy Chong and former Chinese provincial team player Yeping Tang 15-11 and 15-10. (Chong now plays out of Miami Lakes in Florida while Tang is based in Gaithersburg, Maryland).

The women's doubles crown was taken by English players Joanne Muggeridge and Felicity Gallup. In the event final, the English pair beat Cindy Shi and Yeping Tang 15-11 and 15-7.

The OCBC anniversary celebrations also featured an international senior tournament with players from the U.S.A., Taiwan and the Philippines, among others.
