Cindana defeated the teenaged Indian player in a quarterfinal match 11-3 and 11-7. Popat was a surprise silver medalist at last November's world junior championships in Denmark and Indian badminton officials and fans have expressed hopes that she will be a highly ranked player internationally in the near future. In the other women's singles quarterfinal played tonight, Choi Ma Ree, the current world university champion from Korea, defeated Manjusha Kanwar of India 11-6 and 11-4 to set up a semifinal match against Cindana. Women's singles second seed Jo Muggeridge of England swings into action tomorrow when she plays Neelima Choudhury of India in a quarterfinal match. In men's doubles, Kim Yong Hyun and Yim Bong Fon of Korea eliminated a pair of Malaysian singles players, Jason Wong and Wong Choon Han, 15-6 and 15-8 in a first round matchup.
