RECORD ENTRY REPORTED FOR WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
by Mike Grossman
November 12, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - The International Badminton
Federation announced that a record number of countries will be
represented at the world junior badminton championships scheduled
for November 19 to 24, 1996 in Silkeborg, Denmark. 54 nations will
be fielding entries at the tourney in Silkeborg, an increase of 16
over the 34 nations in Malaysia in 1994. 570 entries across the five
badminton disciplines are expected to compete.
The badminton federation also announced that a second division
competition will be provided for those players or pairs who lose their
first round matches. This will allow these players a chance to play
at least one more match with their peers from other countries.
The second division competition will use the experimental 5x9 scoring
system (best-of-5 9-point games) that is being tried by the badminton
federation in Europe.
The federation also advised that the world junior championships will be
televised in Denmark by DK4 and in Asia by STAR-TV.
