by Mike Grossman (from a report filed by "Bigfish")

November 10, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen of Denmark beat compatriots Jens Eriksen and Marlene Thomsen in the finals of the mixed doubles event at the badminton Hong Kong Open earlier today at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

The second-seeded pair of Sogaard and Olsen disposed of Eriksen and Thomsen in two games, 15-8 and 15-11.

The victory of Sogaard and Olsen together with the titles won by Camilla Martin in the women's singles and by the pair of Lisbet Stuer-Lauridsen and Marlene Thomsen in the women's doubles marks one of the few times, if not the first time, that players from a European country have won three event championships in a single major badminton tourney in Asia.
