SUPRIANTO AND SUSANTI TOPS IN OCTOBER SINGLES RANKINGS by Mike Grossman October 1, 1996 (New Shuttlenws) - Indonesian players top three of the world ranking lists issued by the International Badminton Federation today. Joko Suprianto leads the men's singles, while Susi Susanti is the top women's singles player followed by fellow Indonesian Mia Audina. Denny Kantono and Antonius lead the men's doubles players. In women's doubles, Olympic champions Ge Fei and Gu Jun from China are in first place. Mixed doubles continues to be led by Park Joo Bong and Ra Kyung Min of Korea but the team of Trikus Heryanto and Minarti Timur (Indonesia) is closing the gap following the re-retirement of Park Joo Bong. The top Europeans in the rankings are all from Denmark and include Olympic men's singles gold medalist Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen who is ranked third, Camilla Martin who holds down the fifth place in the women's singles, Jon Holst-Christensen and Thomas Lund who are the sixth-best men's doubles pair in the world rankings, Rikke Olsen and Helene Kirkegaard who hold down fifth-place in women's doubles, and the mixed doubles pair of Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen who occupy the fifth spot. Surprisingly, Andreij Antropov and Nikolaj Zuev from Russia are the second-best European men's doubles pair in the October 1 world rankings at number 9. The top players in the Pan-American area are all Canadian. Iain Sydie is the Pan-America's top-ranked men's singles player at number 39, while Denyse Julien is his counterpart in the women's singles at number 21. In men's doubles, Sydie and Anil Kaul lead the Pan-Americans at number 38. Elma and Moira Ong are the top-rated Pan-American women's doubles team at number 23. The highest-rated Pan-American mixed doubles combination is the pair of Darryl Yung and Denyse Julien at number 23. Murray Hocking of Australia is the top-rated men's singles player from the Australia and South Pacific area at number 58 and compatriot Lisa Campbell is the region's best in women's singles at number 38. Peter Blackburn and Paul Staight of Australia are the top-rated men's doubles team from the Australia and South Pacific area at number 29. In women's doubles, New Zealanders Rhona Robertson and Tammy Jenkins have the honor of being the best in the region at number 20, while Blackburn and fellow Aussie Rhonda Cator are the area's tops in mixed doubles at number 19. There are no players from the African countries among the top 100 men's and women's singles players or the top 50 men's, women's and mixed doubles pairs. Among American players, only Olympians Kevin Han (number 57 in men's singles) and the women's doubles team of Linda Frencha and Erika von Heiland (number 44) made the October 1 world rankings.
