27th CAREBACO GAMES 1999 Anthony Nesty Indoor Stadium, Paramaribo, Suriname 11 - 17 September 1999 The last Caribbean Badminton Championships of the century went underway at the Anthony Nesty Indoor Stadion in Suriname on saturday evening, September 11. Prior to the first three team matches of the day an opening ceremony was held were all the players, guests and visitors were welcomed. There was also a one minute silence in memory of the defending Carebaco Champion in boysdoubles, Andre Stewart, who passed away recently. Suriname played Trinidad & Tobago in both the juniors and seniors tie. In the juniors matchup Suriname beat Trindad 5-0. The boys singles was a close encounter. 14 year old Mitchel Wongsodikromo beat Trinidad's Glendon Thomas 13-15/15-13/15-8. In the first game the pressure of the homecrowd was too heavy on the shoulders of the young Surinamese player. After losing the first game he recovered well, winning the match 15-8 in the third. Nathalie Haynes of Suriname won the girls singles from Trinidad's Daysha Francis 11-3 /11-2. Another close encounter was the juniors match in the girls doubles. The Surinamese girls Danielle Melchiot and Carolyn Davids beat Trinidad's Kesmo Benito en Dayswa Francis 6-15/15-11/17-16. In the seniors match between Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago, host nation Suriname started well in the Mens' singles were Oscar Brandon from Suriname beat Darron Charles from Trinidad with 15-2/15-4. After this Trinidad came back strongly winning the other four ties. The Mens' Doubles was an even match between Hedwig de La Fuente & Eric Bleau from Suriname and Darron Charles & Anil Seepaul from Trinidad. After winning the first game 15-5 the players from Trinidad lost the second game 6-15, the third game was won 15-11. After winning the ladies doubles and mixed doubles in straight games the match was won 4-1 by Trinidad much to the dissapointment of the homecrowd of Suriname. Jamaica beat Barbados in there first night encounter at the Anthony Nesty Indoor Stadion on Saturday Night. Jamaica dominated the encounter beating Barbados 5-0. The first game was the closest encounter between Bradley Graham (JAM) and Ryan Holder of Barbados. Graham won 15-9; 15-8 after looking nervous in the intial part of the game. In the ladies singles Shackerah Cupidon(JAM) beat Alison Brewster quite easily 11-1; 11-0. Roy Paul Jr. and Robert Richards made it 3-0 by defeating Dwight Miller & Paul Roberts 15-1; 15-4. N.Saunders & S. Cupidon also made short work of Alison Brewster & Lisa Cheesman going by 15-1; 15-2. In the final match Roy Paul & Nigella Saunders beat Ryan Holder and Lisa Cheesman 15-1; 15-3. Jamaica will play Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday night and Suriname in the final match on Monday. Jamaica's Junior players of Charles Pyne, Alex Haddad and Anna Ebanks will arrive on Monday to participate in the Individual events. Jamaica Junior did not participate in the team event due to the loss of our friend and player Andre Stewart. Other teams that will be competing in the Individual events are: Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Curacao. The games is an IBF sanctioned event and a qualifying tournament for the Olympics.
